Grasshopper
I’m a grasshopper!
When you walk in meadows or pastures, you can often hear our “song”. The song can help males find females to mate. If you manage to get close, watch us and you'll see how we quickly rub our hind legs against our wings to “sing”.
But if you get too close, we'll stop or jump away! And what jumps!
We grasshoppers are herbivores: that means we eat plants, like grass. Although we usually don't bother humans, the great appetite of some of us is legendary: have you ever heard of a locust invasion?
However, it’s often us who get eaten by other insects, spiders, and birds. Even some fish, reptiles (like snakes), amphibians (like frogs), and mammals (like foxes) can eat us!
Without us, some animals might struggle to find food.
Every insect plays an important role in maintaining the balance of nature!
Focus: True jumping champions!
Grasshoppers can jump up to 20 times their body length. It's like a child could hop over 5 cars in one jump! What a struggle for mom to keep up!
