Flying deer
I’m a stag beetle, but entomologists (insect specialists) call me Lucanus cervus!
Even though I’m depicted with "antlers", don't be scared. Mine are not real antlers, but mandibles located near my mouth. Males primarily use them to fight each other. Females have smaller mandibles, but they can use them for defence.
I also have four wings and can fly far, but I can be a bit noisy. If you hear a buzzing in the woods while walking at sunset, it might be me!
To survive, I need trees. My larvae (the young stag beetles that have yet to become adults) grow by eating dead wood.
We stag beetles are insects that need protecting, because we’re important for the forest!
Focus: Legendary jaws!
My large mandibles have inspired many legends. In the past, I was accused of using them to carry embers and cause fires! Of course, that's false! I’m big and noisy, but harmless!
