Dragonfly
I am a dragonfly! Are you scared of my muscles and my jaws?
The muscles of us dragonflies are very powerful because we need to fly fast to hunt. Some of us can even be faster than a moped! My eyesight is excellent and allows me to see and catch even small insects. My strong jaws then enable me to chew and eat them!
We dragonflies are exceptional predators, among the most efficient in the world. We’re very good at catching our prey, even more successful than wolves and lions! But don’t worry, we’re not dangerous to people. Instead, we eat many mosquitoes and midges!
As adults, you see us darting through the air with our bright colours, but we spend the first part of our lives in water. You can find young dragonflies in ponds and streams. They’re brown and cannot fly. However, they are excellent hunters too, and some can even catch
small fish!
Focus: Before the dinosaurs!
Dragonflies are among the first winged insects still existing that appeared on Earth. According to some scientists, these insects were flying in the skies even before the dinosaurs! Isn't that incredible?
